Preparation

  • Preheat your oven and bake the frozen tater tots according to the package directions, typically for about 25 minutes, until they are golden brown and crispy.
  • In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Let it become bubbly but not browned.
  • Whisk in the flour, cooking for about 1 minute until it forms a smooth roux.
  • Gradually pour in the milk while whisking continuously until the mixture thickens and is smooth, about 2-3 minutes.
  • Add the shredded cheddar and Monterey Jack to the thickened milk mixture, stirring until everything melts together. Add the chili powder and garlic powder.
  • Once the tots are ready, place them on a serving platter and pour the creamy queso sauce over the top.
